Population and Design
Mechanistic study to assess how organic pea protein-based High Protein Nutrition Shake (HPNS) impact gut microbial activity from fecal samples of healthy adults (n=10). Study tested this formula in a preclinical model that mimics digestion and gut microbiota fermentation.
Outcomes Measured
Gut microbiota composition, microbial metabolic activity (pH, gas production, and short chain fatty acids), levels of by-products or waste (branched chain fatty acids and ammonia). All results were compared against the negative control.
Results
Organic pea protein-based HPNS enriched microbial communities associated with short chain fatty metabolism in fecal samples from healthy adults.
Organic pea protein-based HPNS significantly increased production of acetate, propionate, and butyrate.
Untargeted metabolic fingerprinting showed significant differences in metabolite signatures for the organic pea protein-based HPNS compared with the control samples.
